Self-Awareness & Self-Responsibility: Why Our Dream Life Matters

How often are we so offended and indignant in our dreams, suspicious, judgmental, unyielding or utterly relentless, persistent, unwavering?  How often are we so quick to declare victory, to revel in our self-righteousness, celebrate our vindictiveness, or dwell in our sense of loss and wallow in our victimhood?

It cannot be emphasized enough how our dream ego thoughts, actions, attitudes, feelings and reactions reveal to us what work remains to be done.  The dream ego is the me-in-the-dream, that aspect of our psyche that is most identified with the waking self.  The dream ego is the barometer of our inner atmosphere pressing for growth and change.

While our dream ego can give us a glimpse into our slowly shifting attitude and perspective, it most reliably reveals the areas where we assume ourselves free and clear and done with our work, when in fact life requires us to surrender more, accept more, love more.

The contents of and messages from our dreams are never wrong.  Everything serves a purpose and there are no mistakes there.  Dreams are blunt, crass, tactless, gross, outrageous, and thoroughly unapologetic. They call our attention and get to the point. Whatever our dreams present us with is the deal, the fact, the report about the current state of affairs.  However we perceive, feel, or react in our dreams is the current state of our evolution.  As long as there is reaction, resistance, defensiveness, or strong emotions, there is work to be done.  Let us not be fooled by a dream ego’s assessment that we are done and resolved.

Observations by the dream ego are a different story.  Observations reveal what we have come to know, understand, and begun to accept.  Implicit in our dream ego observations are realizations and discoveries about where we are in our evolutionary process. Useful information is contained there, too.

There are many good reasons to pay attention and tend to our dream life.  One very good reason is that as we note the dealings of our dream ego, we gain greater and deeper self-awareness, which in turn contributes to greater self-responsibility and second nature impeccability.

Self-awareness is a detailed knowing of who we are, how we have been conditioned by external influences, what our habits and patterns of avoidance and distraction have been, what self-denying impulses prevail, such that we are no longer controlled by them as we were when not abreast of them.  With greater self-awareness we may thus become objective observers of ourselves, exert our agency, and make conscious choices—rather than unconscious automatic or knee-jerk ones—in response to the circumstances and situations in our waking life.  Self-awareness also allows us acquaintanceship with and understanding of our emotional states, our needs and preferences, our hunches and intuitions, our blind spots and vulnerabilities.  Without true self-awareness, it can be challenging to actively engage our capacity to change and manifest our highest potential.

Self-responsibility comes with the cognizance of our most essential needs and inmost desires, with the awareness of our options and possibilities.  With it we guide our choices, commit our focus and discern what is worth our dedicated investments of energy, attention, and care, for the wellbeing of all.  With self-responsibility comes our self-care devoir, the recognition of our need to create space, place, and intentional, conscious routines for contemplation, integration, and greater health and wholeness.

Our dream life matters because it keeps our conscious mind abreast of what we are working on in the unconscious.  While dream ego observations inform us of our progress, dream ego reactions point to where judgement—and self-judgment—are yet to be transformed into empathy, honoring, love and acceptance.  The shenanigans of our dream ego serve to broaden and deepen our self-awareness so that self-responsibility comes easily and effortlessly.
